HISTORY

taxdeductible theatre began in 2005 looking for a way for our community of like-minded artists to have a forum to continue to develop while struggling with the realities of pursuing life in the commercial theatre.

We began with reading plays which we felt had fallen through the cracks in New York City, as many of us believed we were on the verge of doing ourselves.  From there, we began reading new plays, and that led us to the realization that the company isn't about a group of actors looking to keep their chops up, but instead, a group hungry to develop their own collaborative voice.
In April of 2006, while we were building our identity, three members of taxdeductible theatre stumbled upon a method of inspiring new work: dare the writer.
That night, over shots of tequila, they each dared another to write a ten-minute play.  They were free to write whatever they liked, so long as it was true to the dare.  Two months later, these three plays were presented as the first installment of The Dare Project.  Since that time, The Dare Project has grown into one of the fundamental ways in which we pursue our mission.

As we continue with The Dare Project, taxdeductible theatre will use the techniques discovered here, and expand our seasons to include new full-length plays developed in collaboration between writer, company and audience.  We hope to continue to find new voices.  We hope to create memorable experiences for all involved.  Most importantly, we hope to challenge ourselves and our community to follow one basic rule:
demand bold theatre
