The Dares

The dare can be anything—a genre, a line of dialogue, a character—as long as it challenges the writer. 

Once they've been dared, a writer has
one month to write, one month to rehearse, then the play is presented in front of a
packed house as a one night only event.


Below are the dares which have inspired the plays from our first two seasons.

John Keitel:
Write a play about Johnny Depp being gay.

Kelly Howe:
A play where all of the characters are killed at the beginning, and no one becomes a ghost.

Zach Fischer:
Write an action play where no characters move from their original mark.

Write in the style of a British Farce that contains the line, "I didn't invite him because I knew he would come."  And it has a scratch and sniff element.

Christopher Catalano:
A love story involving global warming.

A one minute play with ten different endings.

When being uncomfortable is comfortable.

To evoke a soon to be extinct species.

Bryn Boice:
A girl who can only hear with her eyes closed and talk with her ears covered.

Scott Casper:
Write a play about Brack Obama and Osama bin Laden, in which they both appear.

Sarah Beth-Lee Williams:
Ron Howard decides his true love is Noel Coward and decides to go back in time to meet him, but he keeps missing his stop in the space-time continuum.

Lesslie Dodge Crane:
Sexy time at the holocaust.

3 characters: Mark Twain, Stephen Hawking, and Bob Dole all live underneath a dying child's bed.

Julia Tobey:
A feather duster, a sad clown, and a dead fish.

Jimmie Galaites:
A romantic comedy set on the last day of earth.

Terry Small:
A woman is struck in the head by a flying dog.  She falls into a coma.  While in a coma, she dreams of living on a ranch and raising buffalo.

Jimmie Galaites:
Every other word must begin with k or "k" sound.

Dan Schultz:
Write a musical about the Iraqi War.
